Ubisoft's ambitious open world driving game The Crew was one of the standout surprises at E3 for automotive fans, and we're now able to blow the doors wide open with a series of gameplay videos taken directly from the show-floor.
I'm a massive fan of open world city driving games having racked up the hours with the likes of Driver, Burnout and Need for Speed Most Wanted. The Crew therefore had to be something special to draw my attention.
What impressed me most was the sheer scale – even I wasn't prepared by how improbably huge the map covering the whole of the Unite States is.
Our first gameplay video takes us on a race through downtown New York followed by the team-based mission in Miami chasing down an enemy Hummer seen in the E3 demonstration, as well as a quick look again at the impressively intricate car customisation.
Again, like Forza Motorsport 5, the off-screen footage really doesn't do The Crew graphics justice, particularly as it doesn't capture the smooth 60fps on display. Granted, some elements still look a bit rough around the edges, but remember that The Crew isn't due out until next year so there's still plenty of polish to be applied behind the scenes. What's on display looks very pretty indeed when you consider the size of the city, though.
While the crew is primarily being developed by Ivory Towers, former Driver devs Ubisoft Reflections' influence is still abundantly apparent. Indeed, our video showcases what they arguably do best: property destruction. As with Driver: San Francisco every street will be littered with objects to plough into, while the licensed cars can take some substansial damage.
Look out for more videos from The Crew flooding the channel very soon, including a look at the cockpit camera view.
