The free PlayStation 4 PS Plus games for January have just been revealed and, just like Rocket League earlier in the year, it will see the debut of another automotive title in this case Hardware: Rivals.

Hardware: Rivals will become available on January 5 and will be free for PlayStation Plus subscribers. The vehicular combat title is a sequel to Hardware: Online Arena which released on the PlayStation 2 console back in 2002 and was one of the very first PlayStation titles to offer an online experience.

Hardware: Rivals was developed by an in-house development group at Sony called Connected Content Group (CCG) and according to them Rivals will continue the spirit of Online Arena albeit with a host of new features and upgrades as well as maps, game modes, challenges and more.

In Hardware: Rivals you'll battle it out with your rivals in a range of different vehicles each with different characteristics, there's the slow, heavy and powerful tanks or perhaps you prefer the fast, nimble but vulnerable buggies. CCG have been fine tuning Rivals since the game's beta trial in October and have since added an additional map – Outpost 92, a deep core mining facility set in a icy tundra environment.

CCG have stated that more maps are on the way which will be made available shortly after its launch on January 5. Additionally, the development team are working on weekly community events, mixing up game modes, weapons and rewards to keep players coming back for more. Will Hardware: Rivals become the next Rocket League? Only time will tell.
