Arcade-favourtie Crazy Taxi is making a comeback in the form of Crazy Taxi: City Rush, a free-to-play mobile sequel created in collaboration with original Crazy Taxi creator Kenji Kanno Hardlight Studios, who also developed Sonic Dash for mobiles.
While the core concept of Crazy Taxi, i.e. picking up passengers and scaring the living daylights out of them as you drive dangerously to deliver them to their destination as quickly as possible, Crazy Taxi: City Rush will be another endless-runner-style driving game with simplified controls – you simply swipe the screen to steer your car while the game handles the acceleration. Add in social integration that allows you to compete with friends on FaceBook and cartoony graphics that ironically remind me of The Simpsons Road Rage, itself a parody of Crazy Taxi, and you have the makings of another casual mobile spin-off that doesn't do the series justice.
On the upside, Crazy Taxi: City Rush will feature car customisation and upgrades for the first time in the series, and some new zany characters will be joining the cast of crazy cab drivers. You'll also be able to create custom soundtracks using songs stored on your device. Clearly, everyone is going to load it up with songs by The Offspring – this might be the only way to retain the spirit of the madcap original.
