It’s fair to say that a new DiRT sequel is long overdue. Dirt 3 was released back in 2011 to near universal acclaim, and fans have been pining for an official follow-up ever since (we’re not counting the subpar spin-off that was Dirt Showdown).
It seemed logical, then, to earmark this year for DiRT’s belated comeback. So imagine our surprise when Codemasters didn’t announce Dirt 4 like we all expected, but Grid Autosport, a surprise sequel to last year’s Grid 2 that rectified most of the community complaints of its predecessor.
And yet Codemasters has been teasing Dirt 4’s development for quite some time, with not-so-subtle Tweets hinting at its existance. Today marks yet another cheeky Dirt 4 tease, with a tweet on the official Dirt Twitter account that simply reads “4”, followed by another saying “oops sorry finger slipped.”

Sorry, that was mean of us, what we meant to say was: 4 amazing prizes to be won, check our next tweet for details.

Which direction are you hoping Dirt 4 will take? Judging from Chief Game Designer Paul Coleman’s words in the past, we’re expecting a complete comeback of the white knuckle point-point-point rallying the series was renowned for in the Colin McRae days and less of the Ken Block gymkhana silliness – leave all that to Dirt Showdown as a separate spin-off series. Bringing back rally would be particularly ideal considering that Milestone have yet to announce a sequel to WRC 4 this year, too.
