Game: Forza Motorsport (2023)

Platform: PC, XBox Series X

Publisher: Microsoft Studios

Release Date: Spring 2023

The next entry in the Forza Motorsport series has been officially unveiled, and it’s called… Forza Motorsport.

While the upcoming Forza’s name won’t be awarded many prizes for originality, the developer Turn 10 Studios is promising the game will be more ambitious under the skin. According to the Forza franchise’s creative director, Dan Greenawalt:

The new Forza Motorsport, currently in early developmentis a reimagining of the series. We are taking what has made Forza Motorsport great over the past 15 years and pairing it with new game concepts and new technologies.

As Forza Motorsport is still some way from being released, it remains to be seen what exactly those new game concepts and technologies are. All we definitively know so far is that the game will be able to run at 60fps at a 4K resolution, and will support ray tracing lighting effects.

Likewise, anyone expecting the Forza Motorsport reveal to confirm a huge array of cars and tracks for the game may be disappointed. Laguna Seca is the sole circuit that’s showcased in the announcement trailer, and the only featured cars are the Apollo Intensa Emozione hypercar, the BAC Mono single seater sports car and the Mazda-powered Lola B12/80 endurance racing prototype.

That said, we do know from earlier comments made by senior figures at Turn 10 that Forza Motorsport will likely be a bit more sim-heavy than prior games. According to Turn 10’s creative director Chris Esaki, the upcoming title will feature a new suspension and tyre model, a dynamic track evolution system that affects the grip available over the course of a race, and an atmospheric pressure simulation feature that will impact the car’s engine power, tyre pressures and how much aerodynamic grip is generated.

We also know for sure which platforms you’ll be able to play Forza Motorsport on, as the title has now been confirmed for PC and Xbox Series X. However, you may need to wait a while before you get to try Forza Motorsport out for yourself, as Turn 10 has yet to say exactly when the game will go on sale.

Sounds strange for a Forza Motorsport game to be in early development at this time. Since they’re usually released every two years (with 7 released in 2017). And we’re so used to seeing a new console launch with a car game to show off the new shininess. As for the trailer, I’m not that impressed. “In-engine” which can have a whole variety of astrixes implied, only showing camera cuts of cars through one corner. And some studio/garage setting. If someone wants to get a reaction from me with the move to ray-tracing, show me a night race. Let’s see some… Read more »

Yes, I think early very much comes into the stage of process, so still adding and building components. They’ve probably been working on the game for 2-3 years, but to catch Gran Turismo, they need to build a Gran Turismo and that always takes many years. We’ve got whole new graphics and physics systems to develop, new technologies with R&D depts working overtime. I’ll discuss this all more in a separate article.

Oh no doubt its still very early in terms of getting the puzzle pieces to mesh together. And if its true that it won’t be playable on XB1, puts it outside the [supposed] release window where games are implied to still be playable on XB1. So still a way to go. Which probably put them between a rock and a hard place: having to be present for Microsoft’s event; but can’t get away with just having a title card. And that’s probably why I’m feeling a little negative towards the trailer. Ideally it would have been revealed later down the… Read more »
