MotoGP 18 speeds onto Nintendo Switch

Martin Bigg On June 28, 2018

A few weeks after its release on PS4, Xbox One and PC, MotoGP 18 is now available on Nintendo Switch, marking the first time the series has been available on Nintendo's handheld console hybrid. It's not, however, the first time the series has been available on a handheld, as both MotoGP 13 and 14 were ported to the PlayStation Vita.

Like the other console releases, the Nintendo Switch version of MotoGP 18 features a career mode that lets you climb the ladder from Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup to MotoGP class, a development system that lets you increase your bike's performance, new cut scenes and customisation options. Presumably, it will also run on  Unreal Engine 4 for the first time like other versions of the game.

If the subpar ports of Monster Energy Supercross and MXGP 3 are anything to go by, expect the Nintendo Switch version of MotoGP 18 to have some compromises. Judging from the launch trailer, the visuals have once again been downgraded due to the limited hardware, with flatter lighting and less detailed bike and rider models.

In Monster Energy Supercross and MXGP 3, the number of on-screen AI opponents was also reduced from 22 down to 12. The most glaring omission, however, was the complete lack of online multiplayer. Unfortunately, it looks MotoGP 18 will continue this trend, as it's listed as a one-player only game on Nintendo's website.
