With the dawn of the next generation PS4 fast approaching and Polyphony's prolonged silence on a Gran Turismo sequel, you would think that they are surely busy beavering away testing the PS4 and its potential to render every cross stitching on the car interior's leather upholstery with increased clarity.

According to Sony Europe's Senior Vice President Michael Denny, however, GT6 seems destined to be slated to launch on PS3 within the next 10 months. Perhaps, then, Grid 2 won't be the last racing game swan song for the current generation as we were led to believe after all.

The Freudian slip occurred during an interview with Silicon Republic originally reported by GTPlanet, where Denny discusses the longevity of the PS3 and its stellar line-up of exclusives due out this year, which include The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls and, apparently, GT6:

(function() { var po = document.createElement(“script”); po.type = “text/javascript”; po.async = true; po.src = “http://d15mj6e6qmt1na.cloudfront.net/assets/embed.js”; var s = document.getElementsByTagName(“script”)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(po, s); })();

Traditionally, every PlayStation generation has seen two main iterations of Gran Turismo: the PS1 had GT and GT2, and the PS2 had GT3 and GT4. Three years have now passed since GT5 without any official announcement, and while GT5 has been regularly updated since its launch, we all know it still has its shortcomings. The disproportionate number of Premium and Standard cars is still jarring, for example, particularly when the highly successful Forza Motorsport has hundreds of cars with fully rendered interiors compared to GT5's abundance of recycled PS2-quality car models lifted from GT4.

Like GT4 arguably did for GT3 on PS2, Polyphony has the opportunity to make GT6 the game that GT5 could and should have been and get the series back on track to shadow Forza's slipstream. Three years should give Polyphony ample time to upgrade more cars to highly detailed Premium models, update the car list with more contemporary cars, add more tracks (the team has already previously been spotted snapping photos of Bathurst), refine the visuals so that the environments look equally as good as the cars and, crucially, play catch up with the competition by introducing features that should have been in GT5 in the first place – namely customisable liveries, better damage and make the AI more alive, for a kick-off. Oh, and for the last time please sort out those embarrassing engine sounds…

There are other factors to consider, too. Sony has since commented, but neither confirmed or outrightly denied the possibility of GT6 on PS3. What they did confirm, however, is that GT6 has been in development since 2010 – a time when PS4 development kits were not likely to be available.

It would also perhaps explain why Sony has enlisted Evolution Studios to develop Drive Club as the PS4's flagship racing game for early adopters, which boasts immaculately detailed cars that should please the petrolheads until Polyphony's latest model eventually rolls out into the glossy PS4 showroom a few years down the line. Don't forget that the PS3 also has a significantly larger install base having recently overtaken the Xbox 360's worldwide sales, so, from a business point of view, it would make more sense for Polyphony to capitalise on the PS3's popularity peak whilst the PS4 finds its feet.

Of course, another possibility is that GT6 could go the way of Watch Dogs with a multi-platform release on both PS3 and PS4. Then again, I can imagine Polyphony wanting to bide their time and learn every facet of the PS4's hardware in order to push it to its potential and release a game that's truly mind-blowing rather than rush out a compromised port of GT6.

Whatever the outcome, I sense that there's a very strong possibility we'll get confirmation at this year's E3 in June. Sit tight everyone.
