Game: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled

Platform: PS4, Switch, XBox One

Publisher: Activision Blizzard

Release Date: 21/06/2019

We were more than a little surprised (and excited) when we first learned that Crash Team Racing would be coming back in style this June complete with remastered HD visuals and online multiplayer racing to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Entitled Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, the kart racer has been built from the ground up and remasters the original Crash Team Racing from 1999 bringing the characters, karts, and tracks up to modern day standards.

That’s not all though, the title will also feature some classic content from 2003’s Crash Nitro Kart including remastered karts, battle arenas, and battle modes. Additionally, PlayStation 4 owners will also receive exclusive retro content in the form of retro-styled “blocky” low polygon character skins and karts for Crash, Coco and Cortex along with an additional retro track.

We have been lucky enough to get an early hands-on with the much-anticipated kart racer and are left more than a little impressed.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled pays the utmost respect to the original Crash Team Racing from twenty years ago by staying extremely faithful to the various assets found within the game.

The environments found in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled mimic the originals albeit fully realised thanks to the very latest console hardware. This means that the developer can really bring their original vision of the kart racer to life with much fewer restrictions.

This all equates to beautifully executed environments that are packed with detail and full of life. We enjoyed traversing the many varied obstacles the game happily throws at you which kept us engaged in the experience and we never quite knew what lies beyond the next corner.

The game’s controls are very satisfying and intuitive which is just as well as the tracks provided ample challenge. We actually fell off the course a handful of times thanks to a pesky trap door and some challenging course sections.

We also enjoyed the sense of speed and found it challenging to cut corners close to the edge without hitting the inside walls. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled also boasts an array of colourful and fun powerups which you’ll need to utilise to be top of the podium.

You can view our preview footage of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled below where we take part in several online races. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled will be sliding onto the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch consoles on June 21, 2019.
