2016 was an eventful year for racing games – so much so that we could barely keep up with the regular torrent of releases. The year kicked off with a bang with the release of Milestone's rally sim Sebastien Loeb Rally EVO, and it barely relented since. Rally game fans were spoilt with the long-awaited console release of DiRT Rally and the much-improved WRC 6.

There were plenty of surprises too. TrackMania Turbo was one of the best arcade driving games we've played in a long time, and Ride 2 was one of the best bike games released in a very long time. Speaking of bike games, Milestone truly outdid themselves – as well as Ride 2, we also had the release of MXGP 2, Valentino Rossi The Game and Ducati 90th Anniversary. We look forward to seeing what the Italian developer brings next year.

Elsewhere, the indie racing game scene kept us busy with games such as Table Top Racing World Tour, Mantis Burn Racing Absolute Drift Zen Edition and Drive!Drive!Drive! bringing plenty of innovation. 2016 will of course also be remembered as the year of VR, with the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR showing the potential of technology that could transform the games industry.

Then we had the major releases of Assetto Corsa on console and not forgetting the critically acclaimed Forza Horizon 3. But what was our favourite racing game of 2016? You'll have to listen to our special extended 2016 Racing Game of the Year Awards Podcast to find out, where we delve into other achievements including best graphics, best sound, best car list and best car selection.

How will 2017 compare? Well, we already have Forza Motorsport 7 on Project Scorpio and the belated release of Gran Turismo Sport on the horizon, plus the potential release of Project CARS 2. In short, it's a great time to be a racing game fan.
