Game: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Platform: PC, PS3, XB360

Publisher: Sega

Release Date: 16/11/2012

Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed has picked up a lot of praise for its unique game mechanic that seamlessly morphs your kart morph into a boat or plane mid-race to handle the varying track conditions. And rightfully so – it's a fun, innovative and game-changing mechanic that deserves all the praise it can get.

Equally deserving of praise is All Stars Transformed's eclectic mix of characters from SEGA's vast games library that provides some incredible fan service – everyone from Metal Sonic and Supermonkey Ball's AiAi to Craaaaazy Taxi's B.D. Joe and Pudding from Space Channel 5 makes an appearance. Oh, and Ralph from Disney's latest blockbuster animation film Wreck it Ralph (which is already out in the US yet still months away in the UK damnit) and real life NASCAR woman Danica Patrick. Don't ask.

Of course, with any game of this nature it's inevitable that some fan-favourites will be omitted. Which is why Sumo Digital is letting the community decide which additional characters will be added into Sonic & All Stars Transformed in future DLC.

The news comes from a forum post over on the official SEGA forum inviting the community to vote for their favourite SEGA character from a list of frequent suggestions. Providing that over 1000 people vote for at least three characters by December 1st, Sumo will then present the top three to SEGA who will then try to release them as DLC.

Here's the list of nominees up for voting in full:

-Alis Landale (Phantasy Star)

-Opa-Opa (Fantasy Zone)

-Space Harrier (Space Harrier)

-Ristar (Ristar The Shooting Star)

-Vectorman (Vectorman)

-Bonanza Bros. (Bonanza Bros.)

-Axel Stone (Streets of Rage)

-Blaze Fielding (Streets of Rage)

-ToeJam & Earl (ToeJam & Earl)

-Sketch Turner (Comix Zone)

-Jacky Bryant (Virtua Fighter)

-Sakura Shinguuji (Sakura Taisen)

-Chu Chus (ChuChu Rocket!)

-Rag Rappy (Phantasy Star)

-Ryo Hazuki (Shenmue)

-Arle Nadja (Puyo Puyo)

-Amitie (Puyo Puyo)

-Billy Hatcher (Billy Hatcher & The Giant Egg)

-Kazuma Kiryu (Yakuza)

-Welkin (Valkyria Chronicles)

-Selvaria (Valkyria Chronicles)

-Segata Sanshiro

-Phantom R (Rythm Thief)

-Ash (Hell Yeah!)

-Bayonetta (Bayonetta)

-Hatsune Miku (Vocaloid/Project DIVA)

Quite an exhaustive list, I'm sure you'll agree, particularly for retro players. At the time of writing, SEGA Saturn mascot Segata Sanshiro, Vocaloid's Hatsune Miku and Shenmue's Ryo Hazuki have secured over 100 votes, and Ristar, Vectorman and Bayonetta are also edging close to the target goal.

While there's no 100% guarantee that the suggestions will get past SEGA due to potential third party publishing and licensing issues, we can only hope that other developers will adopt this method of distributing DLC – Turn 10 could certainly learn a thing or two from SEGA in Forza Horizon.

Meanwhile, a couple of new video trailers for All Stars Transformed have surfaced to celebrate its recent launch. The first is your run-of-the-mill launch trailer highlighting the game's distinguishing features, while the second provides a behind the scenes look at Danica Patrick's incongruous involvement:
