Sony Interactive Entertainment’s President and CEO Jim Ryan recently conducted an interview with Business Insider Japan (translated by Gematsu) where he teased some interesting tidbits for the upcoming PlayStation 5 console.

Ryan mentions the differences between the current PlayStation 4 and the upcoming PlayStation 5 (due this holiday period) with the conversation turning towards the exciting prospect of using the new haptic feedback controllers.

The recently revealed official PlayStation 5 logo.

Ryan surprised us when he mentioned how good the controllers felt when playing (of all games) Gran Turismo Sport.

3D audio and the haptic feedback support of the controller are also things that, when you try them, you will be surprised at how big a change they are. Even just playing the racing game Gran Turismo Sport with a PlayStation 5 controller is a completely different experience. While it runs well with the previous controller, there is no going back after you experience the detailed road surface via haptic control and play using the adaptive triggers.”

The change from traditional rumble controllers to haptic feedback is perhaps bigger than most people are expecting. According to Sony, the new haptic feedback controllers allow the player to feel a “broader range of feedback“. This makes crashing your car into a wall feel very different from making a tackle in a football game. Furthermore, ground surfaces will feel very different from each other which is very exciting for the racing genre and is one of the elements that Ryan is particularly impressed with.

Ryan also teases the bigger differences and more unique elements of the PlayStation 5 are yet to be revealed. So far we know Sony’s upcoming console will feature support for up to 8K visuals with up to 120 fps. The console will utilise solid-state drives, use 100GB optical discs and feature backwards compatibility.

Last year there were strong rumours of a PlayStation 5 reveal coming sometime this February which means we could be mere weeks away from seeing what Sony’s latest console looks like along with finding out what its price point and feature set will be. This is certainly an exciting year for gaming, we can’t wait for the madness that will ensue at E3 2020.
