BugBear are bringing demolition derby back in a big way with Next Car Game. Last year's DiRT Showdown was the first racing game to feature last man standing demolition derby in years, but it wasn't quite on the same scale as this.

In the second of our videos looking at the Early Access pre-alpha build of Next Car Game, we take part in a chaotic 24 car demolition derby. With so many cars on-screen at once, the carnage has to be seen to be believed. We have to commend BugBear for staying true to their promise and including a full grid of 24 cars – something that developers with much bigger budgets have failed to achieve, let alone with a soft body damage model as advanced as this.

I particularly like the damage meter: an obvious ode to the original Destruction Derby, one of the primary influences for FlatOut and Next Car Game.

While it's great to see the genre make a belated comeback, the destruction is perhaps a bit too extreme in the pre-alpha build. As you'll see in the video, the front of my car gets completely sheered off thus destroying the engine, and yet the car is somehow still able to continue. Yes, it would suck the fun out of the game if your car was crippled within a minute, but it's hard to suspend your belief when you're watching half a car rampaging across the track.
