After Nintendo filed a new Wave Race trademark in Europe last year, the popular water racer could be making a splash on Nintendo Switch. During a recent interview with Fandom, former Wave Race producer Shinya Takahashi said he would like to see the series make a comeback on Nintendo's hybrid console.

“You may see that game again,” Takahashi teased. “We have been trying to make many games and that may be one of them … I personally love Wave Race!” Of course, this is by no means confirmation that a new Wave Race game will happen. If a new game doesn't get the green light, Takahashi could be referring to one of the older games being re-released on Virtual Console when it eventually gets added to the Switch.

The last Wave Racer game, Wave Racer Blue Storm, was released way back in 2001 on the Gamecube, so a sequel is certainly long overdue. The series originated on the Gameboy in 1994 before fan-favourite Wave Race 64 splashed onto the Nintendo 64 in 1996. Luckily, there are plenty of modern water racing games currently available inspired by Wave Racer to fill the void, including Riptide RP Renegade and Aqua Moto Racing Utopia
