Game: Need for Speed Payback

Platform: PC, PS4, XBox One

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Release Date: 10/11/2017

Back in 2013, Need for Speed made its current-gen console debut with Need for Speed Rivals. As well as signalling the series’ jump to next-gen consoles at the time, Need for Speed Rivals marked the long-awaited return of Ferrari to the series after an eight-year hiatus. Having not featured in a Need for Speed game since Hot Pursuit 2 in 2002, it was a triumphant return starring the mid-engined Ferrari F12 Berlinetta as the game’s cover car. Ferrari also featured in 2015’s disappointing Need for Speed reboot, suggesting that the manufacturer would continue to feature in the franchise.

Ahead of its release in a few weeks, EA's Ghost Games has revealed Need for Speed Payback’s full car list – and it doesn’t feature any Ferraris. Sadly, it seems that Ferrari has pulled out of Need for Speed Payback, despite featuring in other major racing titles this year like Project CARS 2, Forza Motorsport 7, and Gran Turismo Sport. It’s a shame because a lot of people’s early memories of Need for Speed will be evading the cops in a Ferrari Testarossa. Toyota is also strangely absent, although the Japanese manufacturer doesn’t feature in Forza Motorsport 7 either. Sadly, these issues are often beyond the developer’s control. We can only hope that Ferraris will be added to Need for Speed Payback as DLC.

Apart from these glaring omissions, Need for Speed Payback has a solid car selection ranging from sports cars including the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe track monsters like the Aston Martin Vulcan, supercars like the Lamborghini Huracán, hypercars like the Koenigsegg Regera, and vintage cars such as the Chevrolet Bel Air. It also features the video game debut of the new 2018 BMW M5 F90, which graces the game’s cover alongside a Nissan Skyline and Chevrolet Bel Air.
