We knew it was coming, but Dreamworks have now lifted the bonnet on the forthcoming film adaption for Need for Speed. And judging from its action-packed debut trailer featuring lots of expensive exotica, street racing and obligatory slo-mo cop crashes, it looks as if it has a little known film franchise called Fast and Furious firmly in its slipstream.

Directed by Scott Waugh and starring Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul, Need for Speed tells the tale of muscle car mechanic and street racer Tobey's vow for revenge on the man responsible for his false conviction for a crime he didn't commit. Okay, so it doesn't exactly sound like Oscar material, but there's plenty of car pornography for petrolheads to pour over – sighted supercars include a McLaren P1, Koenigsegg Agera R and a Bugatti Veyron SS.

Having said that, they're all probably replicas unless the film was granted an astronomical budget – particularly as some of them get turned into scrap metal in some spectacular-looking stunts.

Need for Speed is slated for release on March 14th 2014 where it will presumably go head to head with the already announced Fast and Furious 7. Kurt Russell and Statham, who already have significant automotive pedigree when it comes to driver's roles having starred in Death Proof and The Transporter series respectively, are among the confirmed cast members alongside series regulars Vin Diesel and more recently Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Now that's an awful lot of testosterone.

A behind the scenes film was also released for the film's initial announcement back in June during E3, giving us a peek at some of the action we can expect to see:
