Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo were both given the honour of having their own branded wheels released, with Fanatec's CSR range and Thrustmaster's T500 both baring the badges of the respective racing franchises. But now it's Mario turn, with the announcement of an officially licensed Mario Kart 8 Wii U wheel.

The peripheral was spotted on GAME's website, retailing for £10.00 and available May 20th. Confusingly however, Amazon is also listing the peripheral with an April 4th release date. The former seems more likely, though, given that Mario Kart 8 blasts onto Wii U just one week later. The wheel can currently only be found on the aforementioned retailer websites however, so it's unclear if it will be released outside the UK.

Much like the wheel attachment bundled with Mario Kart on the Wii, the Wiimote simply slots into the wheel. Obviously, this isn't a driving simulator so you may question the need for a wheel, but it certainly adds to the fun factor. Alternatively, if you want a more true-to-life experience there's always the official Mario Kart ride-on.

GT and Forza are the undisputed console racing champions, and thoroughly deserved to be given the honour of their own racing wheels. But Mario is equally deserving: he is the karting king after all.
