DiRT Rally remains one of the most critically acclaimed rally games of this console generation, so a sequel seems inevitable. And now DiRT Rally 2’s existence has possibly leaked before the game’s official announcement.
Phil Mills DiRT Rally 2 leaked photoFormer British co-driver Phil Mills, who won the 2003 WRC championship as Petter Solberg’s co-driver, recently posted a photo on Facebook showing him recording pace notes on a motion rig for a new unannounced rally game.
The post was quickly removed, but the revealing photo has since been shared on Reddit where a user compared it to a photo of DiRT Rally’s Chief Designer Paul Coleman recording pace notes in the same studio, so it certainly looks like Codemasters is working on a new rally game.
Mills said the new rally game will “launch early next year” and full details will be released “in about six weeks.” That means we should see an official game announcement in late September. He described the game as “good fun” and “the closest to the real thing I have ever experienced.”
Of course, Mills could be referring to DiRT 5 or a completely different game, but the emphasis on realism suggests that DiRT Rally 2 is more likely to be in development. Paul Coleman also recorded individual co-driver calls for each rally stage on a motion rig for added authenticity, and it looks like Mills is using a similar recording technique. Either way, we should find out more next month.
