With only eight or so days to go until this year's Tokyo Auto Salon opens its doors, it's perhaps natural for the natives to start announcing or teasing what they'll be showcasing at the home event.

One such firm is the Japanese racing team Gazoo Racing (the same Gazoo Racing that's competed and scored some impressive results in the Nurburgring 24 Hour endurance race).

And what will it be showing at Tokyo? A heavily modified version of the critically acclaimed Toyota GT86 sports car.

Whilst the teaser shots don't really give much away, the images do confirm that there are noticeable cosmetic changes over the standard car. The front and rear lights have been completely changed, with the front now getting distinctive LED running lamps, and there's also a new aero package that – in true Japanese tuner car style – is topped off by a prominent rear wing.

For the other details, though, things are a bit scarce. The Tokyo show car hasn't been given an official name by Gazoo Racing at time of writing! (though Autocar Magazine claims it'll be christened the 'GRMN FR Sports Concept Platinum')

Thankfully, there is one tech spec that we're really interested in: the engine. It's still the same Subaru-engineered 2.0 four cylinder 'Boxer' unit, but it's allegedly been given a supercharger, so the power and torque figures jump up from 197bhp and 151lb/ft to 325bhp and 318lb/ft respectively.

So, yeah, pretty potent stuff. Is it hard to see why that, unless any of its compatriots pull something special out of the bag, Gazoo Racing's tuned Toyota GT86 will be one of our highlights of the Tokyo Show?
