The British game developer Frontier Developments will soon add Formula One titles to its portfolio, after agreeing a multi-year exclusivity deal to make licensed F1 management games.
As part of the new partnership with F1, Frontier will be responsible for up to four annual licensed motorsport management games, depending on whether it achieves “certain financial performance thresholds”.
It’ll be a while before the first Frontier-developed F1 game lands on store shelves, too, as the Cambridge-based game maker has confirmed it expects to launch the title by the end of May 2022.
Details on the game are thin on the ground at the moment, though we do know the title due in 2022 will be based on that year’s F1 championship. Frontier has also said its F1 management games will be released on consoles and PC, and has left the door open for launching the titles on game steaming platforms.
Frontier Developments founder and chief executive, David Braben, said: “We are delighted to announce this multi-year licence deal with F1. F1 is one of the most popular global sporting franchises in the world, and we believe the combination of the F1 brand together with our extensive experience in management games will deliver fantastic game experiences to a wide and varied audience around the world.”
F1’s Director of Digital and Licencing, Frank Arthofer, added: “Games are an important part of the F1 media ecosystem. This new manager franchise will allow fans to experience the challenging management aspects of the sport through immersive simulation games, and make that experience as accessible as possible for a broad audience. We have huge respect for Frontier and their achievements in the management simulation category, and are thrilled to be working with them for the 2022 season and beyond.
