One of the most common gripes of WRC2 was its lackluster graphics that showed very little improvement from its predecessor and looked vastly outdated compared to the competition.

Thankfully, developer Milestone has addressed this issue by developing a bespoke new graphics engine, known as ‘Spikengine’ for WRC3. At this stage it already looks as if the work has paid off, as the transition from WRC 2 to WRC3 is like day and night, with tremendously improved lighting, particle effects and detail.

To demonstrate these enhancements, a new developer diary talks us through the development of WRC3’s visual style courtesy of both the Game and Art Directors. The new Monte Carlo track is cited as being the starting point for the new satellite modelling, lighting and particle system, and we also gain an insight into the modelling of the cars, which now sport a much more intricate level of detail – the bodywork deformation is looking particularly promising.

It's not just the graphics engine that's seen a dramatic overhaul, either. Even the menus are being treated with a similar attention to detail this time, as Milestone appointed some of “Italy's greatest illustrators” to adorn the menus with some rather elegant artwork that infuses an Italian style which reinforces Milestone's heritage. You can see a selection of WRC3's artwork in our gallery below.

WRC3 will be sliding its way into retail on October 12th. Don't forget you can watch our exclusive gameplay videos where Alan puts an early build of the game through its paces.
