It's understandable that officially licensed products tend to be focused for the masses, the developers have to pay for these expensive licenses after all, and what better way of doing so by making your game appeal to as many people as possible.

Kylotonn Games acquired the official World Rally championship license recently and have managed to release two WRC titles which were fun, and although they weren't simulations per se, certainly had a learning curve and offered challenging and rewarding gameplay.

Kylotonn will release their third official WRC title later this year with WRC 7, and this time it seems the French development team want to move closer to the simulation end of the racing spectrum which will please many fans.

Speaking with Redbull, Alain Jarniou, game director at Kylotonn, stated that not only will WRC 7 feature longer stages than seen before, but the roads are bumpier, narrower, and generally more “dangerous”.

Indeed the long “epic stages” are said to last up to 15 minutes in length which will challenge the focus and concentration of even the hardiest rally racer.

Kylotonn have worked alongside real-world rally drivers such as the WRC-3 world champion Sebastien Chardonnet, but have also listened to WRC engineers who have provided key information which will influence the physics engine, car handling, sounds, pace notes and more.

We'll learn more about WRC 7 as we get ever closer to its launch this Autumn, however we do know that the title will feature the 13 countries of the official calendar, weekly updated challenges, and an eSports competition (to coincide with the real-world WRC). Finally, the development have no plans for VR support for WRC 7, however we do know that the title will take advantage of the extra power that the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X grants.

We recently got a hands-on with a work-in-progress version of WRC 7 which you can see below.
