WRC 7 hands on gameplay: Mexico and Monte Carlo

Martin Bigg On June 15, 2017

With the recent release of DiRT 4 stealing the spotlight, you'd be forgiven for forgetting that a new WRC game is in the works. Kylotonn Games will be releasing WRC 7 this autumn on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, and from what we've seen at E3 2017 it will continue the progress made in WRC 6 with even narrower, more authentic special stages which ramp up the challenge considerably. It's a stark contrast to WRC 5, which was criticised for featuring stages that were unrealistically wide and too easy.

In our initial hands-on, we take on a short gravel stage in Mexico and the challenging Monte Carlo in a Hyundai i20 using a triple screen setup for added immersion.

The improved sense of speed in WRC 7 is immediately apparent, something which too many racing games lack, which should make navigating the unpredictable special stages even more harrowing, adding to the sense of danger.

Our only gripe is that the robotic co-driver in WRC 6 doesn't appear to have been replaced in WRC 7, but this could still change in the final game. This year promises to be an exciting year for the WRC with new rules allowing faster, more aggressive cars harking back to the notorious Group B era, so expect the physics to be adjusted accordingly in WRC 7. We'll have more from WRC 7 at E3 coming shortly, but Kylotonn seem to be steering the series in the right direction.
