Release Date: 12/10/2012

This week VVV’s Alan Boiston was given the opportunity to gain a first hands-on with Black Bean’s official game based on the World Rally Championship. Given the somewhat disappointing experience offered by the previous WRC titles, hopes were not all that high that this third iteration would do anything to alter that impression. Following this hands-on however it does appear that WRC 3 has exceeded expectations and could quite frankly be, a bit good.

Due for release in October, the first trailer looked promising with improved graphics and narrower stages. Following some leaked footage of an early build hopes were high that this could be a considerable improvement. Receiving my preview code I wasn’t expecting much, but a couple of turns of the wheel and it was instantly apparent WRC 3 has made considerable steps forward. Improved visuals are clear to see but the handling is what will make or break this game.

Rally is a complex sport to simulate; it also features a range of fans with different expectations. Some prefer the perfect recreation of the sport with Richard Burns Rally being the established benchmark, while others prefer the accessibility and feel of the Colin McRae Rally titles or DiRT franchise. WRC 3 appears to have found a mid-point requiring greater skill and input than the DiRT titles while not going to the extremes of RBR.

Visuals in this early version are still being improved with the cockpit cam to be added along with other details. A wealth of new game options are to be announced while the sound is apparently still a work in progress, though the new co-driver is a welcome addition featuring much more positive commands and feedback.

We’ll be updating with a preview with further feedback in the coming weeks besides developer interviews.
