Indie tribute games to the golden age of the arcade racer seem to be all-the-range at the moment, with ’80s and ’90s-themed homages such as Drift Stage, Power Drive 2000 and Horizon Chase all currently in development. They’ve come at the right time, too – as racing games are getting more realistic, the arcade racing genre was starting to get left behind.

However, the game that arguably started this trend has since slipped off the radar. I’m talking about The 90’s Arcade Racer, a one-man project originally starting on Kickstarter in 2013 that pays tribute to the classic SEGA arcade racers that dominated the era such as Daytona USA and Virtua Racing.

However, updates have been less frequent since the project was successfully funded, leaving many to wonder if the project had been written off altogether. Mercifully, just as Horizon Chase was announced this week to steal the spotlight, a new gameplay video has emerged showing The 90’s Arcade Racer running on the Wii U in glorious 60fps, along with a Kickstarter update sharing more details which is only available to backers.

The 90’s Arcade Racer is looking better and better every time we see it. The retro details are spot on, from the announcer in the car selection screen, the vibrant visuals, preposterous powerslides and of course the blistering sense of speed delivered from the crisp 60fps. We also get to see a few previously unseen tracks, including a course set on a toy slot car track plus a brief look at a bizarre bonus mode which looks like something out of Buster Bros shown at the end.

While much of the focus has been on the Wii U version, The 90’s Arcade Racer is also slated for release on PC, Linux, Mac, iOS and Android, but no final release date has been set – last we heard, the project was meant to have been finished by mid 2014.

Are you looking forward to burning some retro rubber in The 90’s Arcade Racer?
