Bad news Nintendo fans: Project CARS has been scrapped on Wii U, dashing the dreams of players hoping to play a thoroughbred racing sim on the neglected Nintendo platform.

The news comes from NintendoLife in a statement from Slightly Mad's Ian Bell, who confirmed the studio has abandoned the development of Project CARS on Wii U.

"The official line is that we're awaiting an announcement from Nintendo on new hardware," he said.

"As of now Project Cars is simply too much for the Wii U."

Bell has previously hinted that Slightly Mad has been having difficulty developing Project CARS for Wii U, commenting that its release "always a maybe" after its was delayed following the launch of Project CARS on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The developers admitted they were struggling to optimise the game on Wii U at the time, suggesting that waiting to launch on Nintendo's next console could be more viable, which of course has now been confirmed.

In a previous interview with us, Slightly Mad's Creative Tudor showed great enthusiasm for launching Project CARS on Wii U. “When people saw that the Wii U version was delayed there were conspiracy theories going around: people would say ‘oh my god why not delay all versions?’ There’s no conspiracy theories here," he told us.

"We’re not going to rush it just so it comes out at the same time because it would look subpar – we’re never going to release a game that doesn’t look as good as our vision intended it to be. So we just kindly asked for a bit more time. And the Nintendo fans are crying out for a game like this – there’s no game like this out currently. We can’t disappoint the Nintendo fans. So when we release the game on Wii U we want to make sure those guys have an experience they’re proud of and we’re proud of.”

“They’re going to get a bespoke experience as well," he told us when outlining Project CARS' proposed Wii U exclusive features. "They’re going to be able to use the gyroscope in the actual gamepad, change the gamepad to be the rear view mirror or the actual dashboard with telemetry data, the overview map. They’re going to get a great version of the game, but it’s going to take a bit more time.”
