A potentially controversial microtransactions setup has been introduced to Gran Turismo Sport, as part of the PS4-exclusive racing game's July content update.

Initially available only in Asian and American territories (the system will be rolled out to the remaining regions on 2nd August 2018), the setup allows Gran Turismo Sport players to purchase any car that costs less than 2,000,000 in-game credits with real money through the PlayStation Store marketplace.

At time of writing, the pricing scale and structure for Gran Turismo Sport's microtransactions in the UK are unknown. The only official points of reference are the $0.99 (£1.30) price of the 184,000 Credits Mercedes-AMG GT S on the US PlayStation Store, and the Japanese marketplaces prices that start at 100 Yen (£0.69) go up to 300 Yen (£2.05) for the 1,000,000 Credits cars.

In addition to the microtransactions, the Gran Turismo Sport July 2018 update adds an array of new content and features to the game. Three layouts of a fictional, 5.8-mile "Circuit de Sainte-Croix" street circuit located in southern France has been added to the PlayStation 4-exclusive racing game, and players are now able to add decals to their in-game avatar's helmet and racing overalls.

Arguably the headline addition, though, is the 2017 Mercedes W08 Formula One car that Lewis Hamilton secured his fourth world championship title in last year. Joining the successful single seater are six other vehicles, with new GT League career mode championships being added to complement some of the new cars.

The full vehicle roster for Gran Turismo Sport's July content update has been listed below:

  • 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO
  • 1991 Honda Beat
  • 1991 Mazda 787B
  • 2002 Daihatsu Copen Open Top
  • 2004 Ford GT LM Spec II Test Car
