FlatOut 4: Total Insanity is a fun but flawed destruction racer

Martin Bigg On March 23, 2017

The FlatOut series recently made a belated comeback with the release of FlatOut 4: Total Insanity, with Kylotonn and Tiny Rebel Games taking over the reins from original developer BugBear Entertainment.

If your lasting memory of the franchise is the dismal FlatOut 3: Chaos and Destruction, then fear not. FlatOut 4 Total Insanity repairs the damage done to the series, arriving at a time where there's a high demand for arcade racers that don't take themselves too seriously. There's fun to be had in the reckless racing and driver-ejecting ragdoll physics mini-games, but FlatOut 4 isn't without its flaws, sadly.

The damage modelling is bewilderingly basic for a game that puts so much emphasis on the destruction, the visuals are dated, and career progression is frustratingly slow thanks to meager cash payouts and a confusing car unlock system.

Our full FlatOut 4 review will be up shortly, but in the meantime you can find out our initial impressions on FlatOut 4 in our team chat below.
