F1 2017 developer Codemasters has outlined the new career mode additions and improvements over last year's F1 2016 release.

Claimed by Codemasters to be the "most complete" career mode ever seen in a Formula One game, F1 2017's single-player component again tasks players to become an in-game Formula One World Champion within 10 seasons. As with F1 2016, F1 2017 will allow players to attempt to accomplish this by either promotions to higher-tier teams, or by building up a team over the course of the campaign.

The latter option will be made available by an expansion of the Research and Development Points system from F1 2016. Rewarded based on the player's performance in races, qualifying and practice sessions, these points will allow players to unlock parts that will increase the competitiveness of their car.

With 115 Research and Development upgrades to unlock, it's more likely that F1 2017 campaign mode completers won't be able to rapidly max out the tech tree. In comparison, F1 2016's limited selection of 25 upgrades meant some players were able to fully build-up their car over the course of just a few seasons.

As with prior Formula One games, component reliability will be present in F1 2017, albeit with extra depth in terms of season-long strategy. On top of managing the life of their transmissions, players will also need to keep tabs on the lifespan of powertrain components such as the turbocharger, the energy recovery units and the combustion engine itself.

Exceeding the season's allocation of transmissions and powertrain components will result in the player receiving grid place penalties, and the durability of the parts can be improved via the aforementioned Research and Development system.

All 20 race venues from the 2017 Formula One World Championship will be present in F1 2017, as well as a nocturnal setting for Monaco and shortened versions of Bahrain, Silverstone, Circuit Of The Americas and Suzuka. The latter novelty tracks will only be accessible in the career mode by participating in invitational events featuring F1 2017's frequently-promoted classic car content – though players will be able to drive the 2017 machinery on these layouts in other game modes.

F1 2017 is currently scheduled for release on 28th August 2017 across the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. You can check out our most recent hands-on gameplay video from the E3 2017 show floor below.
