Game: Formula Fusion

Platform: PC, PS4, XBox One

Publisher: R8 Games

Release Date: Re-branded as "Pacer"

Following its successful Kickstarter campaign, R8 Games’ WipEout-inspired anti-gravity racer Formula Fusion has been given permission to land on Steam Early Access, giving players a chance to sample what promises to be a belated new era for the futuristic racing genre.

Put simply, Formula Fusion is essentially WipEout in all but name, featuring anti-gravity racing where you pilot futuristic crafts through ravaged New York city tracks set in the year 2075. Even the development team  have prior experience with WipEout, as some of the team previously worked on WipEout 3.

As always with Steam Early Access games, the release represents an early alpha build of the game, so expect to encounter the usual bugs, crashes and performance issues as it’s still work-in-progress.

In terms of content, the Formula Fusion Early Access is somewhat slender: you get access to one craft and track and two game modes, including single player racing with up to 9 AI opponents.

“The initial offering is a base track – with base behaviour and a flavour of the quality we aspire to. It represents a baseline, containing current and experimental design mechanics in order to use your experiences to refine and polish the full development of the product that will be going on in the background,” R8 Games stated. “It is a window on the progress we are making. We will deliver regular updates to expand the experience and make necessary changes – for the good of the game.”

The final release will feature 8 tracks, 5 classes of craft across 10 teams, weapons and vehicle customisation, with game modes including online racing, endurance racing and eSports leagues.

R8 Games intend to keep Formula Fusion in Early Access for approximately six months before the intended final release rolls out on PC in the first half of 2016. Console versions are said to follow at a later date.

You can find out more on the Formula Fusion Steam page, where the Early Access can be purchased for a special offer price of £19.54.
