From our extended hands-on, it's safe to say WRC 5 has been a welcome surprise. It's certainly come on in leaps and bounds after our initial worries from that uninspiring announcement trailer

Our latest look at WRC 5 takes us to a location that is always a favourite among rally enthusiasts: Finland. Handling consultant Mark Reynolds takes the wheel to show us how it's done in a white knuckle ride through the winding woodland trails with expert proficiency.

Rally purists will probably criticise WRC 5's depiction of Finland's stages for being too wide compared to real life, but don't forget WRC 5 is attempting something different to the competition: DiRT Rally is your hardcore rally simulation, whereas WRC 5 is an approchable alternative designed to give rallying exposure to a wider audience.

While our hands-on reveals that there have been graphical improvements since the early previews, we'd say the stages still look too sparse – where are all the sucidial spectators gathered on the verge snapping photos and getting as close to the action as they dare?

Likewise, the handling is probably best described as authentic – again, it's not a hardcore simulation, but it's not completely on the arcade side of the spectrum, either, with a physics model that's intuitive, and most importantly fun to drive.

With a little help from a few racing game veterans, French firm Kylotonn appear to have achieved a lot in a relatively short space of time, especially when you consider this is their first stint with the WRC license following Milestone's four year reign, meaning the game has been developed from scratch using a new in-house engine without using assets from previous games.

We'll have more hands-on WRC 5 to follow looking at other locations, including Sweeden, Germany and Monte Carlo.
