Since WRC 5's announcement last year, there has been a surprising lack of videos released to give us an idea of what to expect – until now. Available to play at Kylotonn's E3 booth, we stopped by for a hands-on with an early work-in-progress version of WRC 5, taming a Volkswagen Polo R WRC around a special stage set in Argentina.

After seeing the footage, hopes that the involvement from ex-SimBin staff would result in WRC 5 being a rally simulation have been dashed. Graphically, WRC 5 looks passable, but the handling seems simplistic in the footage, although we'll reserve judgement until we've had proper hands-on.

Compared to Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo's authentic-looking special stages, the Argentina stage shown in WRC 5 is also far too wide to be representative – it doesn't present much of a challenge. The aim here seems to be to make WRC 5 accessible to a wider audience, and the wide stages resemble Milestone's original WRC game circa 2010. To be fair, I expected this would happen considering Kylotonn are in the same position Milestone were, having to start from scratch with their first WRC game after obtaining the license.

WRC 5's apparent arcade approach might not necessarily be a bad thing, however. DiRT Rally and Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo already cater for the simulation market, so there is definitely a market for an accessable, more arcade-style rally game – it's been a long time since since SEGA Rally Revo. On the other hand, you would expect an officially licensed WRC title to be more representative of the sport.

It's still too early to make an informed judgement on WRC 5, so we look forward to seeing more footage and a hands-on in the run up to its release in October on PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PS Vita.
