Ever since the Top Gear we all know and love was terminated after Clarkson infamously came to blows with the producer, fans have been curious how the show will fare in its next incarnation with Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc at the helm.

The wait is nearly over, as the new model Top Gear is back in May – and now we have the first trailer giving us a glimpse of what to expect from the show's reboot.

All the hallmarks of the show we loved before appear to be intact, from the high production values and exotic locations to gratuitous, tyre smoking powerslides and, er, puking presenters.

Petrolheads will be happy to see a plethora of interesting supercars on display, including an Aston Martin Vulcan, a Ferrari F12tdf, the new Ford Mustang and a McLaren 675LT with Jensen Button at the wheel. We also see Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc doing a literal supercar shootout with a gun-mounted Corvette Z06 and Viper ACR.

I'm still reserving judgement until the show airs, but from the trailer I can't help but feel like the show trying too hard to be like its former self – even the challenges don't seem fresh, with what looks like rehashes of the car vs. jet fighter race and a challenge featuring Reliant Robin. My fear is that Top Gear circa 2016 will be like watching a remake of a film that tries too hard to replicate the magic of the original instead of standing out on its own merit.

Still, the presenters look like they were having fun filming it and the production values are still as slick as ever. For better or worse, it doesn't look like the BBC will be changing the formula of Top Gear too drastically, but you have to wonder if it will have the same long term success. Judging from comments on YouTube, people are already very cynical.

Don't forget too that Clarkson, Hammond and May will be returning with their own as-yet unnamed new show on Amazon Prime in September. I can certainly live in a world with two rival car shows.
