Gran Turismo's father figure Kazunori Yamauchi has provided new details on what we can expect in Gran Turismo 7.

Speaking to Eurogamer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Kaz confirmed that Gran Turismo 7 is currently in development for PS4, before tackling some of the series' long-standing issues.

In what is sure to create controversy among Gran Turismo's fanbase, Kaz revealed that the assets used for the Standard car models, some of which date back as far as Gran Turismo 4 on PS2, will likely stay in Gran Turismo 7: “I doubt that we’ll be throwing away the standard cars,” said Yamauchi. “Each car has its own fans. So I think we’ll hang on to the archive. In the meanwhile, some of those cars we may be able to make into Premium cars as they become available – but basically we’re more focused on increasing the number of premium cars.”

It's certainly a strange decision on Polyphony's part. The disparity between the low-res Standard and highly detailed Premium cars in GT5 and GT6 was jarring, so Gran Turismo 7 seemed like an ideal opportunity to start from scratch and remodel the cars with added detail – just as Turn10 did for Forza Motorsport 5.

Forza 5 was heavily criticised for its meager car count in comparison to previous games in the series however, which could explain why Polyphony seem reluctant to let go of their backcatalogue. It's an interesting contrast of developer rationales – while Turn10 favor quality over quantity, Polyphony once again appear to be focusing on quantity over quality. Let's just hope the final game has a significantly higher number of Premium car models to balance out the Standard cars if they're set to stay.

GT6 has enjoyed a wealth of updates lately, but the promised engine sounds update still hasn't materialised. "I think the quality of the sounds in Gran Turismo 6 will be improved, but most of the work will be done in Gran Turismo 7," he said. Meanwhile, the much-anticipated Course Maker and B-Spec modes which were absent from GT6 are expected to arrive in an imminant update.

As for a release date for GT7, Kaz doesn't think it will make this year contrary to his previous optimism. He also has no plans to release a separate Prologue game for GT7 as we saw for GT4 and GT5, which acted as tasters for the main games with cutback content.
