Release Date: 06/11/2018

Remember the forgotten cult classic Rollcage? It's finally getting a belated spiritual successor in the form of GRIP, an upcoming futuristic combat racer in development by Caged Element that takes the core gameplay of Rollcage, i.e. extreme speed, flipping cars and an arsenal of weaponry, and update it for a new generation.

GRIP will feature fast-paced combat racing in armored cars each with their own specs that can vault across floors, walls and ceilings. Races will take place across a variety exotic locales, from ice planets to urban cities. Each track will feature multiple routes and destructable structures.

Rollcage was known for its destructive weapons, and GRIP will expand its aresenal with a little help from the community: "We want to create the most bombastic weapons ever seen in a game like this, and with this we welcome input from the community. You help us design them, and we'll bring them to life."

GRIP will also feature something that was sorely missing in Rollcage due to its era: online multiplayer. The intense nature of the races seems tailor made for online play. Meanwhile, the soundtrack will stay faithful to Rollcage, comprising of Drum 'n Bass,  Breaks, Techno and Trance, with the option to play the game with custom soundtracks.

GRIP is currently in development by a two-man team (one of whom happens to be a former programmer of the original Rollcage released back in 1999) with releases planned for PC and PS4, and has already been successfully Greenlit on Steam after just five days of submission. The team is looking to start a Kickstarter campaign sometime this Summer: "We're looking for help on Kickstarter to grow our team and get this game fully developed, so please help us out if you can," the developer stated.

A gameplay trailer has been released, showcasing the high octane, fast-paced combat racing you can expect from GRIP taken from an early prototype version of the game. Even at this early stage, it looks stunning, injecting some much-needed intensity into the racing genre that's been missing lately in the gulf of arcade racers. Put simply, GRIP has the potential to be brilliant if executed well. At this early stage, it's looking like one to watch, so we'll definitely be keeping it on our radar.

And just for old time's sake, here's some gameplay from the original 1999 Rollcage. Ahh, nostalgia – can you believe it's been 15 years since the last Rollcage game?
