We’ve gone biking made here at TeamVVV, what with.Milestone’s MXGP hogging the limelight for reviving motocross gaming. Meanwhile Trials Fusion is set to cause a spike in controller sales next week when players inventively break them out of frustration. Then of course we have MotoGP ’14, the next generation’s bike racing simulation game due out in June. Unless you’re an Xbox One owner, that is.

You’d be forgiven, then, for forgetting about Road Redemption, an indie project that bills itself as a spiritual successor to Road Rash. Gameplay revolves around high speed bike racing, gang missions and of course combat with a variety of weapons including traditional baseball bats and firearms.

We’ve seen a few fleeting glimpses of Road Redemption in developer videos showing off the brutal bike gameplay in some early alpha videos which showed some promise, but you can now sample it for yourself as the long-awaited alpha build has been released to Kickstarter backers who pledged $40 and above for the alpha level tier. And if you didn’t back the project, you can still purchase the alpha build at the Road Redemption website.

The developer says the alpha version contains only around 5% of the content we can expect in the final game, which will include a “seamless, procedurally generated world, diverse environments, and full multiplayer coop”. You can see it in action in a very brief gameplay video snippet below, showing the player beating rivals with a sledgehammer. Suddenly the distant memories of Road Rash have come flooding back.

Currently, the alpha build only supportsthe  Xbox 360 gamepad, but mouse and keyboard support will be implemented soon.

Road Redemption is expected to join Steam Early Access at some point in the future.
