With the release of the highly anticipated Oculus Rift headset now only weeks away, the VR revolution is fast approaching – and Project CARS will be at the front of the grid when it comes to supported racing games. Today Slightly Mad Studios announced that Project CARS will be a launch title for Oculus Rift when the commercial unit is released March 28th.

As we've discussed at length before, racing games are an ideal platform for racing games, with the head tracking increasing the immersion and precision allowing you to monitor your track position and look into the apex with greater precision. Project CARS will therefore be a significant showcase of how racing games will benefit from the technology.

“Ever since the announcement of the Oculus Rift and the team getting their hands on one of the early devkits we immediately knew the racing genre was going to be a perfect fit for virtual reality." Project CARS' Game Director Stephen Viljoen commented.

"With players already having an understanding of what it feels like to sit in the driving seat of a car, wheel peripherals already existing that provide a natural driving input, and the nature of racing being one of (hopefully!) forward motion, the ability to now wear a virtual helmet and experience the action through the driver’s eyes is the final piece of the puzzle allowing you to get as close as possible to the real thing.”

The Oculus Rift release of Project CARS will come bundled with all previous On Demand content released so far, along with further VR-specific improvements.

Furthermore, anyone who purchases Project CARS on Oculus will get automatically upgraded to the Game of the Year Edition when it's released some time this Spring.

“Project CARS has always been regarded as one of the most beautiful racing games out there already but we’re always looking for new gameplay experiences too", Creative Director Andy Tudor added. "Once you’ve peered closer at the fine detail we put into the cockpit of a supercar like the Pagani Huayra BC, hastily glanced left at a IndyCar trying to overtake, looked towards the apex whilst trying to nail a perfect lap, or even looked out of the back window whilst trying to reverse you’ll never be able to go back.

"Without a shadow of a doubt, virtual reality makes you a better racer and we fully expect many of our fans and Esports pros that already own sim racing setups will eagerly be adopting the Rift as the way to take their game to the next level.”
