Following the release of Need for Speed Rivals, EA Ghost have been working on the next entry in the long-running Need for Speed series, which has been rumoured to be a long-requested return to the beloved Underground series.

Ahead of E3, EA has announced on the Need for Speed FaceBook page that all will be revealed this week on May 21st with a "first look at the return of NFS", teasing us with a blacked-out image pointing towards the official Need for Speed YouTube channel where the inevitible announcement trailer will no doubt be posted.

However, a cunning Facebook user cranking up the brightness of the teaser to reveal the image of a Porsche sporting several body kit modifications in the midst of an illegal night time street race. Look familiar?

Indeed, EA Ghost have suggested before that car customisation will play a big part in the next Need for Speed, so it's looking like a return to the Underground era of Need for Speed is on the cards. We'll likely be given a full glimpse of what to expect from the next Need for Speed before the full unveil at this year's E3.

Need for Speed 2015 was given an extra year of development time in order to polish it up, thus missing the series' traditional annual slot.

"We are already deep in development on our next game and want to make this promise to you: we will listen to you. We’re going to give you the game you’ve been asking for. It will be the game you deserve, but to do that will take us some time,” EA Ghost said at the time.

The free-to-play mobile spin-off Need for Speed No Limits is also due for release this year.

Judging from the trend of recent Need for Speed reboots such as Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted, it wouldn't surprise us if it will be called simply "Need for Speed Underground." Even if it doesn't end up being called Underground, it will likely still be in spirit with Underground-esque features such as extensive car customisation and night time street racing looking likely.

Are you hoping for a Underground revival in the next Need for Speed?
