Game: Need For Speed Rivals

Platform: PC, PS3, XB360

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Release Date: 15/11/2013

During its in-game demonstration at Gamescom, EA Ghost Games were keen to direct our attention to Need for Speed Rivals' assortment of personalisation options allowing you to change the cosmetics of your car, from custom paint jobs and decals to liveries. It's a far cry from the days of Need for Speed: Underground, though, where you had free reign to fully modify your car with new parts such as tacky body kits, exhausts and side skirts.

A new trailer reveals the extent to which we'll be able to modify the cars in Need for Speed Rivals, and it's fair to say that fans who were hoping for a return to Underground-esque customisation will be left disappointed.

Instead, Rivals looks to feature a similar system to last year's Most Wanted, with an array of linear performance upgrades available. Options to purchase upgrades for top speed and acceleration can be seen in the trailer, along with what looks like upgrades for vehicle handling and bodywork strength for ramming opponents.

In addition, players will be able to equip cars with Hot Pursuit-style pursuit tech, including EMPs and spike strips.

All-in-all, the personalisation options are certainly more extensive than Most Wanted, but perhaps not the return to form EA Ghost would have you believe. Are you happy with the level of car customisation available in Need for Speed: Rivals?
