Game: Need For Speed Rivals

Platform: PC, PS3, XB360

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Release Date: 15/11/2013

The final part of our exclusive Need for Speed: Rivals hands-on gameplay is a simple exploratory drive around the open world map of Redview County, as Alan takes in the sights and sounds while doing his best to avoid confrontation with fellow online Sunday drivers in order to explore the map without disruption.

From our test drive, Redview is proving to be a rich and impeccably detailed map, thanks to the sumptuous graphics engine powered by EA's Frostbite 3. PS4 owners may have been shafted by the unceremonious delay of DriveClub which was set to dazzle with its jaw-droppingly detailed car models, but the latest build of Need for Speed Rivals more than makes up for its absence.

Car models are highly detailed as you would expect, but it's the extra environmental details that give Rivals the edge – the lighting, particle and weather effects showcase how the developers can utilise the extra horsepower of the new hardware.

In terms of layout, Redview is very reminiscent of the good ol' days of Hot Pursuit, with its never ending winding roads and snowy mountain passes perfect for exhilerating high speed pursuits mixed with Most Wanted's open world freedom.

All-in-all, it's safe to say we're now pretty pumped for Need for Speed: Rivals. We have a strong feeling that this will be the belated series' return to form we've been sorely waiting for. Suddenly, the future of Need for Speed is looking brighter than ever before under the solid leadership of EA Ghost.
