The last time we got behind the wheel of Codemasters' Grid 2 we were introduced to the concept of the World Series of Racing, a fictional tournament that fuses every imaginable motorsport discipline into one all-encompassing global championship fronted by founder and entrepreneur Patrick Callahan.

In the first of a series of forthcoming gameplay trailers, Codemasters acquaint us with Patrick who narrates the video, babbling on pretentiously  about his 'vision' for the WSR whilst introducing us to two key US car clubs you'll be driving for at the start of Grid 2: New Union, who specialise in professional circuit racing, and Trans American Racers, who specialise in gruelling one-on-one face-off road races.

Once again, the familiar sights of the Chicago street circuit and California Coast road are heavily featured, both of which have been used to promote Grid 2 since it was initially announced, along with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

It's still unclear whether Patrick will act as an inconsequential and irritating voiceover devoid of personality or be a fleshed out character whom we get to see. We're hoping it's the latter, as we feel that Codemasters' apparent strive to deliver an engaging narrative could be one of Grid 2's strong suits that sets it apart from the competition.

Part of Grid 2's narrative will also revolve around media coverage of the WSR provided by ESPN, which will pan out in a series of live action cut scenes acted out by the actual anchors of the real life ESPN. Keen to flaunt their partnership, Codemasters has released a brief video whereby sports anchor Kevin Connors and analyst Toby Moody discuss the merits of the WRS's cross-discipline racing:

Naturally, a cluster of screenshots have also been released to accompany the trailer which you can view in the gallery below, but there's one surpise shot in particular that has raised our intrigue.

The screenshot in question features the Volvo S60 BTCS, which marks the long-awaited return of touring cars in a Codemasters game. Given that the original GRiD had the BMW 320si and Chevrolet Lacetti from the WTCC this comes as no surprise, but it's interesting to note that Codemasters has acquired the license for the Belgian Touring Car series. More reveals are said to follow, so whether or not we can expect to see additional touring car licenses remains to be seen. How about the BTCC, Codemasters?
