Gran Turismo is about to get the big screen treatment, if rumours are to be believed. Edit: Sony has since confirmed to Joystiq that the project is underway, but provided no other information.

The news comes from The Wrap, who report that Sony have given the green light for a Gran Turismo film adaptation The touted producers may rise an eyebrow or two, though: while Sony exectives Elizabeth Cantillon, DeVon Franklin and Hanna Minghella will reportedly be overseeing the project, the Gran Turismo film is said to be in production by Michael de Luca and Dana Brunettithe – the people that brought you The Social Network and, erm, 50 Shades of Grey. Let the dogging jokes commence.

Quite how 'the real driving simulator' will be adapted into a feature-length film remains to be seen, and details about what the project will entail exactly are being kept closely under wraps for now.

The announcement was surprising at first, but when you consider that Gran Turismo is the PlayStation's most successful franchise having sold over 70 million it was perhaps only a matter of time before the someone capitalised on its success.

There's also something of a cinematic car craze at the moment. Fast and Furious 7 and the Need for Speed film adapation will have the auto action movie front covered next year, and both will no doubt be loaded with testosterone and high-octane action scenes full of stunts and explosions. Then there's the upcoming Hot Wheels film, which again will likely be packed with far fetched stunts. But that's not what Gran Turismo is about.

This year's RUSH will hopefully be a more apt comparison, a film that centers on two racing drivers with polar personalities and the perils that follow as these personalities clash with devestating consequences. While it will undoubtably be Hollywood-ised to a degree, it looks like a refreshingly authentic take on the world of motorsport, and has the potential to sit alongside the likes of Steve McQueen's Le Mans as one of the greatest racing movies of all time. At any rate, it surely has to be better than colossal car crash that was Driven, right?

With this in mind, the GT Academy would be a more plausible premise for a Gran Turismo film, documenting the compelling journey from gamer to racing driver. At this stage, we only have speculation to go on for now, though, but an all-out automotive action fest under the name of Gran Turismo seems improbable.
