GT Academy to make Australian debut later this year

James Allen On February 27, 2014

The GT Academy programme will be making its debut on Australian asphalt in 2014.

Confirmed by the respective Aussie branches of Sony Computer Entertainment and the Nissan Motor Company, the innovative driver talent scounting competition will be open to avid Gran Turismo players from Down Under for the first time, after both Sony and Nissan acknowledging the "high demand from fans" for a national GT Academy competition.

As with every other GT Academy held since the concept's inception in 2008, a strict selection procedure will be adopted, whittling down the applicants who pass the Gran Turismo 6-based time trial challenges to the six who'll be eventually entered into the 'Race Camp' final selection round.

'Wild Card' events will also play a prominent part in the driver selection process: on top of the 14 Gran Turismo players who'll make their way into the National Final through the GT Academy demo process, an additional 14 will also be able to fast track their way into the series by setting the fastest time at specific GT Academy 'Wild Card' competitions.

Nissan and Sony have confirmed these 'Wild Card' live hot lap challenges will be held at V8 Supercars Championship races and "other public events".

No information regarding when the inaugural Australian GT Academy will begin have been revealed at time of writing, though it's expected these details - along with those for the 29 other GT Academy competitions that are expected to run in 2014 - will be announced in the near future.
