Since its launch last week, Forza 5 has had its fair share of controversy. Despite universally positive reviews from the critics, there's been considerable backlash from the community surrounding its stripped down car and track content, missing game features and of course the monetisation debacle which I recently reported on. And now comes the revelation that its glistening graphics are not quite as pristine as we were led to believe.

The discovery comes from NeoGAF, who have scoured screencaps comparing the current retail version of Forza 5 to the build we saw half a year ago at E3. The results are quite startling.

From the above comparison of the same car racing round the Prague circuit, the visual downgrade is crystal clear – the loss of shadow and geometry detail in the retail version is striking, and the ambient lighting is evidently inferior in the retail version.

Keep in mind too that the E3 build was reportedly running on Nvidia powered GTX cards on Windows 7, which could partially explain the downgraded graphics on Xbox One.

More screen comparisons can be found over at NeoGAF
