Ford will be returning to the iconic 24 Heures du Mans race in 2016, half-a-century on from its famous 1-2-3 victory at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Officially announced on the eve of this year's Le Mans race, Ford's return to the fabled motorsports venue will be headlined by a race-prepped version of its GT supercar.

Despite not being a full-on works effort (the programme will instead be run by the Chip Ganassi Racing outfit), the Ford GT racing car will be fielded throughout the 2016 World Endurance Championship in the 'GT Pro' category.

As such, the Ford GT competition car will compete at Le Mans against an array of proven homologated racing cars, such as the Aston Martin V8 Vantage GTE, Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 and Porsche 911 RSR.

Chip Ganassi Racing will also field the Ford GT endurance racing car in the Tudor United SportsCar Championship, which the team already has participated in with its Ford-powered Daytona Prototypes.

Though Michelin has been confirmed as the official tyre supplier for the Ford GT racing car, no drivers have currently been confirmed. However, it's likely the line-up will consist primarily of current Chip Ganassi Racing drivers.

It's also likely the Ford GT racer will be featured in a future Forza game. Not only has the 'Forza Motorsport' brand been confirmed as an official sponsor for the project, but the Ford GT supercar on which it's based is the cover car for this year's Forza Motorsport 6 game.

The Ford GT racing car will officially turn its wheel in anger for the first time at next year's 24 Hours of Daytona endurance event.
