The first official gameplay video has finally been released for WRC 5 currently in development by French firm Kylotonn Games, who are also now working on a new FlatOut game next year. Taken from a work-in-progress beta build, the gameplay video showcases Sébastien Ogier's trailing through the gravely passageways of Portugal in his Volkswagen Polo R WRC.

From a graphical perspective, I must admit I'm pleasantly surprised. WRC 5 isn't looking stunning by any means, but all the elements are there in terms of lighting, detail and texture quality. It's certainly much better looking than some of Kyltonn's previous titles. Don't forget the assets are still in progress and the game still isn't out for another four months too, so there's still time to further improve the fidelity. Indeed, the developers stress the video doesn't represent the final quality of the game, as elements such as the HUD, audio and co-driver pacenotes are still in development.

The track is still looking too wide and too short at just 3 minutes long to be an authentic rally special stage, though, suggesting that WRC 5 is aiming to appeal to a mass audience. As such, Kylotonn seem to have adopted an accessable approach to the physics, but it's difficult to judge without actually playing it. This isn't necessarily a bad thing – WRC 5 could still be perfectly playable and be a fun arcade alternative to the hardcore handling models offered in Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo and DiRT Rally, but you'd expect an officially licensed motorsport game to be authentic and in the same vein as its realistic rivals.

If you're wondering why the gameplay looks familiar, it's because the same stage and car was featured in our first look E3 video, but you can at least appreciate the details in greater clarity in the official direct feed video.
