Ahead of its reveal next week at Gamescom, Milestone have released the first teaser trailer for WRC 4, giving us a brief gameplay glimpse of the 2013 Citroen DS3 driven by Mikko Hirvonen and 9-times World Champion Sébastien Loeb hurtling round the snowy Sweeden stage.

The visuals appear to be have been subtly refined with sharper textures, better defined car models and enhanced environemental effects such as the visible fog and overcast skies indicating the time of day

Mercifully, Milestone also seem to have taken our feedback regarding capturing the atmosphere of WRC by populating the stages with more spectators and visible national flags – a small, incidental detail that nonetheless matters to passionate rally fans.

Elsewhere, the physics have also been further refined – most notably in the visible negative camber when the Citroen goes airborne.

Disappointingly, the lackluster engine sounds from WRC 3 still remain in the trailer. It should be noted that the footage has been marked as work in progress, however, although whether there is enough time left to make any drastic changes remains to be seen. Sadly Milestone don't seem to have dropped the dubstep, either – one of WRC3's gravest sins.

We also managed to uncover the first official screenshot advertising its upcoming reveal at Gamescom:

Looks like we'll have to wait until WRC 4's formal unveil at next week's Gamescom event to get a better insight of the sequel's fan-requested features. As ever, we will endeavour to bring you comprehensive coverage of WRC 4 as it unfolds, including a hands-on and developer interview directly from Gamescom leading up to the final release on PS3, Xbox 360, PC and PS Vita this October.
