Considering it's Sony's leading first party racing game for the PS4, Gran Turismo Sport had a surprisingly lackluster showing at E3. While the Gran Turismo Sport E3 trailer was more rousing than the underwhelming initial reveal trailer and we finally got confirmation that the game will be released sometime this autumn, Gran Turismo Sport was curiously absent at Sony's E3 conference which was overloaded with new gameplay trailers and game announcements.

Unsurprisingly, Gran Turismo Sport will be embracing the PlayStation VR headset, though sadly the PS4 racing simulation won't be fully playable in VR. Instead, Gran Turismo Sport will feature a separate VR Tour mode which will be limited to head-to-head races and will only support around a third of the tracks. It's not all bad news though, as all 177 cars in Gran Turismo Sport will still be playable in VR.

We managed to get a brief hands-on with Gran Turismo Sport running in VR at E3 2017 on a new rally stage. From the video, there's a noticeable downgrade in visual fidelity, though it's worth noting that PSVR games always look worse on a TV screen than they do when viewed in the headset. Racing games are still a great showcase of the immersion VR can offer, but, as the cutbacks in Gran Turismo Sport and DriveClub VR show, it's clear that the technology is still in its infancy.
