Polish developer Techland are best known for their zombie apocalypse series Dead Island and Dying Light along with the Western-themed FPS series Call of Juarez. However, their latest game announcement has come as a bit of a surprise.

As you have probably guessed by now since we're reporting it on VVV, it's a racing game. And since you've presumably already read the headline, it seems pointless to leave you in any more suspense: Techland have announced they are developing FIM Speedway Grand Prix 15 due for release later this year on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. It's being handled by Techland Games Warszawa, a subsidary studio based in Warsaw.

For the uninitiated, the Speedway Grand Prix is a form of motorsport in which riders skillfully powerslide 500cc powered bikes around an oval track without the aid of brakes or gears.

Being an officially licensed game based on this year's season, regular riders such as Nicki Pedersen, Jarosław Hampel, Tai Woffinden, Krzysztof Kasprzak and Greg Hancock will feature, along with authentic recreations of the Grand Prix stadiums and different surface types, including Målilla (Sweden), Cardiff (UK), Horsens (Denmark), Toruń (Poland), and Melbourne (Australia).

In addition, FIM Speedway Grand Prix 15  will feature real-time commentary and online multiplayer for up to four players.

"Speedway is the essence of immense power, adrenaline and… brakeless racing!" Techland Warszawa's Studio Head Marek Soból commented. "I strongly believe that FIM Speedway Grand Prix 15 will be the best speedway simulator ever made by Techland. We treat it as a completely new beginning for the brand."

In actual fact, this shouldn't have come as a surprise at all. Before Techland became infected with a need to create zombie apocalypse games, they have been pretty prolific when it comes to racing games, having released four previous FIM Speedway games along with a selection of racing game IPs including Xpand Rally and GTi Racing. FIM Speedway Grand Prix 15 marks the series debut on current-gen consoles, however – previous entries were only released on PC.

Looks like we'll have no shortage of dirt track bike racing games to choose from. In addition to FIM Speedway Grand Prix 15 we also have MX vs ATV Supercross Encore landing on consoles and PC later this year, while Milestone is gearing up to announce the sequel to MXGP this month

Are you excited at the prospect of a new licensed Speedway Grand Prix game?
