DriveClub just can't seem to steer away from controversy. It's the news everyone didn't want to hear: as is a running trend with contemporary console racing games, DriveClub will feature the dreaded 'm' word…micro-transactions.

But before you start condemning Evolution Studios, it's not quite the criminal act that an abundance of free-to-play games have adopted as DriveClub won't let you exchange real money for in-game currency. Instead, you can pay to unlock cars quicker.

Game Director Paul Rustchynsky described the system to IGN as a mere "shortcut."

"In Driveclub you earn Fame, and as you earn Fame, you level up. Every time you level up, we give you another car. There's no double gating or anything along those lines, you're given the car straight away without having to do anything else. The only thing we do have is a couple of shortcuts.

"If you want to unlock a car immediately, you can pay to unlock that car straight away but it's not a consumable microtransaction," Rustchynsky continued. "We don't let people buy Fame, for example and spend lots and lots. The idea is if you want to shortcut things you can do – it's identical to what we did in Motorstorm RC. So if you played that, you know what we're doing here."

Of course, what really matters here is just how much real world money you can be expected to shell out on DriveClubs dream motors. Sony has yet to reveal any prices, but we can only hope it isn't another Forza Motorsport 5 monetisation-scale disaster.
