In the run-up to its release next week, Sony has confirmed which wheels will be compatible with DriveClub. Suffice to say, it's a paltry list that pales in comparison to Project CARS' lengthy list, although don't forget it's available for multiple platforms. In essence, if you don't own the latest Thrustmaster peripherals, you're out of luck.

Currently, only two wheels will work with DriveClub: the Thrustmaster T80 (also available as the T80 DriveClub Edition) and the T300 RS. Both wheels suit different budgets, with the T80 acting as an entry level wheel without force feedback, while the T300 RS features sophisticated force feedback and 1080 degrees of rotation.

A blog entry also reveals how Sebastian Loeb took to the track on DriveClub to test the T300 RS: "It was epic to see Sebastian Loeb acing almost every corner of an epic downhill point-to-point route set in Canada and naturally set one of the fastest lap times we’ve ever seen – on his first go."

This of course means that a lot of Logitech G27s will be left to gather dust. To answer the lingering question as to why Logitech won't support PS4 despite the manufacturer's loyalty to PlayStation in the past, apparently it's simply because the PS4 requires a security chip that the G27  doesn't have, as the company previously revealed on Twitter.

@djhazardous @WMDCars @realandytudor G27 requires a security chip for full functionality w/ PS4, and it does not have this chip. Sorry 🙁

Alternatively, GAME are selling an exclusive DriveClub-branded version of the wireless PS4 Compact Racing Wheel which attaches to the Dual Shock 4, if you're on a budget.

It certainly sounds like Sony has some sort of exclusivity deal with Thrustmaster. However, Sony has stated the contrary: "We'll continue to add support for other manufacturers' wheels as and when they become compatible with the PS4." This at least indicates that future peripherals from other manufacturers will possibly support DriveClub, but it's still a blow for the legions of racing fans that have already invested in other wheels.

Will you be upgrading your racing wheel in preparation for DriveClub?
